Battle of Golgan's Field - Battlesystem Battle Report

I just finished watching Jack The Giant Slayer, and it inspired a giant battle with my daughter.

Here is the situation.  Giants are advancing from the north towards some unguarded and unfortified towns.  The local lord has decided to meet them as they advance, before they reach the towns.  If nothing else, he hopes to delay them long enough for many civilians to move south, or better yet, reinforcements to arrive.

The Advesaries.

4 Fire Giant Warriors AD 12*10, AR 4, Hits 5
4 Hill Giant Warriors, AD 10*10, AR4,  Hits 4
Hill Giant Chieftain, AD 12*10, AR 4, Hits 5

Humans...

30 Hvy infantry split into 2 companies of 15 each,   AD 6, AR 6, Hits 1 (armed with spears and large shield.  Can form shield wall(-1AR) and second rank can attack.
18 Human Medium Archers, split into 2 units of 9 each. AD 6*6, AR 7, Hits 1
10 Medium cavalry, AD 6, AR 6, Hits 2
There was also a company of dwarves which joined the fight.
18 Dwarves, AD 6, AR 6, Hits 1 - They get -1 AR when fighting giants!

The Battle.

Round 1.

The giants quickly close the gap between the two armies.  The humans decide to hold their ground.
All of the human archers open up at long range.  They score 6 hits, but the giants armor is tough.  One giant takes two wounds.
"Brace yourselves!  Here they come!"

Round 2

This time the humans move first.  They decide to hold their ground again.
The giants move even closer.  Now they are within close range to the archers.  They score another 6 hits, but the giant's armor manages to deflect four of the hits.  Still, with 2 more hits, one hill giant falls!  First blood to the human army

Round 3

The humans go first again.
The battle is joined!  1 giant dead to arrows,
another to archer's swords!
The cavalry declare that they will charge, and they succeed the charge initiation roll.  They charge two of the giants.  The giants see them coming and throw boulders at them.  They manage to hit one of the riders, but the rider is just able to get out of the way enough that it only brushes him!  The cavalry strike with a powerful charge.  They do 6 hits, but the giant's armor is strong.  A hill giant takes two hits!  In return they flail, but only land 1 hit which badly harms one of the riders.

The giants move in and engage across the line.

One giant strikes at the archers on the left flank.  He flails about killing 2 of them, but they strike back with a ferocious attack, and the giant goes down.  They scored 6 hits, but the giant only managed to block 2!

Far to the right, the giants strike the dwarves.  2 dwarves fall, but they manage to injure the giant slightly

First dwarven casualties
There are a few morale tests that need to be made, but the humans and dwarves are determined to hold the field!
Fighting on the right.

Round 4

Humans go first again!
The infantry unit to the far right wheels and prepares to charge the giant which is tangling with the archers.
The cavalry continue to fight the two giants.  The giants get 4 hits, and the riders only save one.  They smash the wounded rider, and send a second one flying.
Spearmen prepare to charge the flank of the giant chieftain.

In the center, 2 giants engage the human spearmen.  The humans manage to get 6 hits, but the giants save all but one.  In return they deal 4 blows, but the human shield wall manages to hold, though one soldier was smashed.
The center

Next to them one giant engages the archers on the right.  He kills 2 men, but doesn't get hurt.
The giant chieftain alone faces the spearmen.

The dwaves again wound a giant, and this time they manage to dodge out of the way of all attacks.
Dwarve engaged!

Round 5

This round was a bloody one!

The cavalry continue to melee around the two giants.  The get 6 hits, but the giant's armor deflect 5.  On the other hand the giants score 4 hits with no saves!  Two riders down!

The infantry on the right declare a charge, but they badly fail their initiation check, and their formation breaks up in confusion.  They fall into an irregular formation, and hold their ground.

The human spearmen in the center manage to get only 3 hits, and the giants save 2 of those.  In return, the giants crush another 3 spearmen.

The archers on the right continue to go toe to toe with a giant.  They hit 3 times, but the giant's armor saves two of those hits.  He isn't able to land a blow.

The dwarves manage to land 6 blows, all of which are deflected by the giant's armor.  The giants crush 2 more dwarves!

There are a lot of morale checks here, but once more, the defenders refuse to fall back, though they are getting badly beat up!

 Round 6

This round is the Giant's high water mark.  Because of failing morale, it almost looks like they will win.

The giants move first.

On the left, one giant breaks off from the cavalry, and rushes the spearmen in the flank before they can reform.  He manages to crush three men, but they can't hurt him.

Smashing into the flank of the humans!
The cavalry continue to battle with the last giant they are facing.  They get 4 hits, but the armor of the giant blocks them all!  At the same time though, the humans manage to evade his powerful blows.

In the center, the giant king smashes 5 men!, but he gets 2 wounds in return.  However, this is more than the spearmen can take, and they fall back badly shaken.  To their left, the archers there freak out and panic, completely routing off of the field!

On the right, the archers manage to get another wound on the giant, but they are badly shaken and fall back when they see yet another soldier fall the the gaint's blow!

The dwarves have a disastrous round.  Things are looking good when they get enough blows on a fire giant to finish him off.  But they in turn loose 3 more, and then they roll a 20 on their morale check, instantly routing.  They start to flee, deciding that this isn't really their fight.
Defenders fleeing everywhere!

The whole center and right of the line is now falling back before the giants, but the giants have lost so many.  Will they be able to capitalize on their advances?

 Round 7

This is the turning point, and the humans start to rally!

The infantry on the right can't seem to rally themselves, even with the general yelling for them to return.  They flee the field, and keep running.  None are ever seen again!

The general then sees that it is him and the giant leader in the center.  He does the brave thing and charges.  Neither manages to land a significant blow.

The archers to his right manage to rally, and the dwarf leader convinces his troops that they have to help, so they too turn to face the fight.

A giant charges the archers.  He strikes 3, but only one is killed by his blow.  They manage to wound him again.

The giant also charges the dwarves killing 3 more without taking any damage!

Back on the left the cavalry and giant are still engaged, but there is no more bloodshed this round.

The other giant continues to engage the spearmen on their flank.  3 more are killed, and they fall back, shaken from the experience.

Round 8

The humans go first.

The spearmen rally, reform their line and advance into the giant.  They manage to land 5 hits, and the giant saves only twice.  He is now badly hurt, but in his anger, he crushes two more men!  They can't handle this, and once more fall back in disarray.

In the center the two leaders swirl back and forth.  The general manages to injur the giant chiefain even more, but is also injured.
A view of the right flank

To their right, another archer is cut down, but in one last desperate fight, they kill the giant.
Fallen by lowly archers!

Dwarves battle with the last giant on their flank
Another dwarf is crushed, but they land one more blow on the giant.

 Round 9

The battle ends abruptly!

On the left, the cavalry finally manage to land some serious blows.  They get 6 hits, and the giant can only block 2.  With only 2 hits left, he falls!  He only deals one more hit to the cavalry before falling, but they manage to save against that one.
The dead giants on the left

Once more, the infantry manage to regroup and reengage the giant.  They deal 6 hits, and he can only save 4, so he too is felled, though in his last blow he takes out another spearman.

The general is struck for 3 hits, but blocks 2.  He is now down to only 1 hit.  However, he strikes back and also hits for 3 strikes, and the giant leader blocks 2, but he was on his last hit, and it is enough to finish him off!

To the right, the dwarves and giant are engage in one final bloody melee.  Two dwarves are crushed by the giants mighty blow, but they manage to land 6 hits, and the armor of the giant only blocks 3, so it too is felled.
The dead giants on the right

Just like that, the last of the giants fall, and the defenders, tired and badly beaten release a cheer, because they know that their families are saved!

The survivors march home, victoriously!

The lesson I got from this battle, is that points aren't enough of a gauge of an armies strength.  The point values of the giants was actually more than the defenders.  The dice rolls pretty well evened out over the game, so it wasn't that one side rolled better than the other.  Maybe if the giants had stayed in a tighter group they could have pulled it off.

Still, it was a pretty close thing.  Morale nearly ended the battle in the giants favor anyway.

Warrior Heroes Armies and Adventures BATREP

Warrior Heroes Armies and Adventures BATREP

Haven't posted in a long while, because I have been way too busy.
I have gotten to paint a lot of figs and play a few games, but haven't posted anything lately.

Today I got to do a small fight for WHAA.

This was the situation.  A small dwarf patrol was in the woods near their mines when they heard some noise in the distance.  What they found was a small band of goblins who thought that they had found an easy target.

Each round the players roll a single die vs their Rep.  The highest die gets to go first, but they can only activate troops that have a rep lower than the die roll unless they are with a leader.  In this fight everyone will be with a leader, so the dwarves will always activate (the leader has a rep 6), and the goblins will only fail to activate on a 6 (leader has a rep 5)

 The Dwarves

Dwarf Patrol
1 Commander, Rep 6, AC 6, 2 hits
1 Hero, Rep 5, AC 5, 2 hits
4 Warriors, Rep 4, AC 4.  2 have crossbows as well as hand weapons.

The Goblins

Goblin Raiders
1 Leader, Rep 5, AC 5, 2 hits.
2 Heavy warriors, Rep 4, AC4
8 Warriors, Rep 3, AC 2
NO Ranged weapons.

The Battle

Round 1

Gobs roll 5, Dwarves 2
Goblins advance, and dwarves advance

Round 2

Gobs roll 5, Dwarves 4
Gobs advance.
Dwarves shoots.  1st dwarf hist with 2 successes vs 0 successes, so one goblin falls Obviously Dead (OD)
The second dwarf fires and hits with 2 successes, but the goblin also has 2 successes, so the dwarf misses.
Goblin first Casualty

Round 3

Goblins 1, Dwarves 3
Goblin second casualt
Dwarves fire again.  The first hits with 2 successes, against one, and a goblin goes down Out Of Fight (OOF).  The second dwarf hits with 2 successes vs 1 success, however the goblin had a shield and rolled a 6 negating one success, thus blocking the shot.
Goblins continue to advance.

Round 4

Gobs 2, Dwarves 4

Yet another goblin falls to crossbow fire
Dwarves fire again.  One more goblin goes down after the dwarf rolls 2 successes against none and NO blocks!  (The goblins have been rolling bad the whole game so far!)

Round 5

Gobs 1, Dwarves 6
Dwarves continue to shoot, but this time get no hits.
Goblins are close enough to charge, so they declare a charge.  They only get one success vs the dwarves 3, so they are too frightened to charge.
The two sides face off!

Round 6.

Gobs 4, Dwarves 1
Goblins again try to charge, and again fail.
The battle is joined!
Now the dwarves decide to get in close, and they declare a charge.  They get 3 successes to the goblins 3, it is enough to charge.
The dwarves move in and make contact with the goblins.
On the far left, one dwarf slowly beats back a goblin, and after 3 sets of rolls in which he beats the goblin by 1 success, he pushes the goblin back and kills it.
One other goblin is knocked OOF, but everyone else is locked in combat.

Another goblin falls, and unfortunately, so does one of the heroes!

Round 7

Goblins 6, dwarves 3 - The goblins can't activate
since their leader is only REP 5!

The dwarves continue to attack.  The two leaders move in and engage each other, but surprisingly no one can get an upper hand and all combats are locked!

Round 8

Gobs 2, Dwarves 6
1st casualties of melee
Fighting continues.  The dwarf leader manages to get a single wound on the Goblin leader, but the goblins move 2 warriors against the dwarf hero, and in the fight that follows, the dwarf hero can't roll a single success, so the 2 goblins cut him down.  This causes the two nearest dwarves to roll a test to panic, and one freaks out and runs!
Another goblin falls OD, while one more is OOF.

Round 9

Goblins 5, Dwarves 4
Goblin leader runs, and so does one of the dwarves (to the right)
Goblin leader decides that it is time to run, but the other goblins can't get away from combat.  2 more fall OOF.  This fight is basically over for the goblins.  Now it is just about the goblin leader getting off the field to rally more goblins!
Three goblins left running!

Round 10

The goblin leader runs, but the two dwarf crossbowmen take aim.  One misses, but the other lands a crossbow bolt right in his back and he falls.

One goblin falls to the dwarf pursuers, and the goblin leader takes a crossbow bolt to the back!  Game over!

Zombies!!!

I have been addicted to The Walking Dead since I first saw it, then when I saw some figs that were remarkably similar to them, I knew I had to have them!

Here is my first batch of new figs...
Some of our heroes!

Of course you have to have someone to fight!
The figures from Khurasan Miniatures are amazing! http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/

They have a great level of detail for 15mm figs.

I have bought the rules All Things Zombie from 2 Hour Wargames.
http://www.twohourwargames.com/all-things-zombie.html

I still have some more zombies to paint, but soon hope to be having my first fights!

Return - Star Wars Battle using Babylon 5 Wars

It has been a while since I posted.  Moved to a new state, started a new job (two actually), and have been rather busy over the last year.

Things are calming down, so I am ready to start posting again...

This is a game using Babylon 5 Wars.  It is the start of a small campaign I am doing.

The setting:

After the battle of Yavin 4 and the first Death Star being destroyed, the Rebellion had a great time of growth even though the Empire was still very strong.

Soon, the Rebellion started moving in bigger ways.  After the Mon Calamari joined the alliance, they started bringing in some Mon Cal Cruisers.

This campaign takes place in the remote Eldark Sector.  The sector is in the Outer Rim.  It has a few dozen systems, that has some good resources as well as a couple of older shipyards.  It is remote enough that the Empire has only allotted a small fleet do defend it.  It is a perfect target for the Rebellion to turn.

For the campaign, the Rebellion has allocated on MC80a cruiser, a couple of Assault Frigates, and about a dozen other ships as well as a few squadrons of fighters.

The Game:

For this game, Rebel spies have detected a single Star Destroyer guarding a system.  It only has 2 support ships, so it seems like a good opportunity to weaken the Imperial forces in the sector.

The Opponents:

The Rebels - 1 MC80a cruiser, 1Assault Frigate, 2 Nebulon B Frigates.  3 squadrons of X-Wings, 2 Squadrons of A-Wings, 1 Squadron of Y-Wings, and 1 Flight of B-Wings.

Imperials - 1 Imperial Star Destroyer II, 2 Carrack Class Cruisers.  4 Squadrons of Tie Fighters, 3 Squadrons of Tie Interceptors, and 1 Squadron of Tie Bombers.

The odds favor the Rebellion, but they have to escape with as many of their capitol ships as possible, and not too many fighter losses, because they don't have a lot of replacements!

Round 1

Imperial Deployment
Rebel strike group

The rebels decided to drop in from two different locations and hopefully split the Empire forces.  On this turn the Rebel Assault Frigate along with one squadron of X-Wings, and the Flight of B-Wings drop in on one flank.  The Empire quickly dispatch their patrolling TIEs and launches two more squadrons.

Round 2

The shooting starts.  The Assault Frigate opens fire on the Star Destroyer, but only weaken the shields.  The first flight of TIEs draw close and the X-Wings engage destroying 3 TIEs.  The Star Destroyer returns fire on the Assault Frigate blowing through the front shields and doing some minor damage to the Frigate's hull.

Round 3

2nd Rebel strike force jumps in
The second task force of the Rebels drop in, and the commander of the Star Destroyer starts to get worried.
The TIE squadron and the X Wings continue to fight.  A couple of X-Wings take some damage, but they annihilate the TIE Squadron.

The B-Wings fire at the first Carrack and manage to weaken its shields.  The 1st Squadron of TIE Interceptors arrive and launch into the B-Wings destroying one and damaging the other.

The MC80a opens fire on the ISD with all of the guns it can manage.  It does heavy damage to the shields of the star Destroyer but can't get through.

The Assault Frigate fires on the first Carrack, but has poor fire control and only does minor damage to its shields.  It also fires point blank at the oncoming TIE squadron and takes one out.

Finally the ISD opens fire on the Mon Cal cruiser, but unfortunately many of its weapons are still recovering from the opening salvo at the Assault Frigate.  It takes out the Mon Cal's shields, but fails to do any significant damage.

Turn 4

Things really heat up this round!
The TIE squadrons move to intercept the Mon Cal and its fighters.  There are some long range shots fired and some of the X-Wings take damage, but none are destroyed.  However several TIES go up as well as a couple of TIE Intercepters.

A view of the action
Over at the original entry point, things are not going well for the Rebels.  The X-Wings take out 1 TIE Interceptor, but the TIE Interceptors finish off the B-Wings, and the Carrack Cruiser also takes out some of the X-Wings.  However, the missiles that the B-Wings had launched hits the Carrack and does heavy damage.  All of the Assault Frigate's weapons are recharging before they can fire.

The ISD fires on the Frigate doing some more damage.  It now has a lot of fires burning across its front, but it is still intact.

The Mon Cal now moves to bring its broadside into range and opens up with devistating effects.  Explosions rock the outer hull of the ISD.  One Nebulon B moves in close to the dogfighting fighters and takes out a couple, and fires its heavy guns at the ISD doing a little more damage.  The second Nebulon B moves in closer to the ISD firing and doing even more damage.

Turn 5

The ISD is trying to recover its shields as its guns come back on line to bring fire on the Mon Cal cruiser, but a lot happens before it can open up!

The original battle goes even worse for the Rebellion.  The Assault Frigate takes more damage from the Carrack cruisers, and the last of the X-Wings are blown from the sky in their dogfight with a squadron of TIE interceptors and TIEs.  Y-Wings race to hit the Carracks but can't get past their shields.
Good overview of he battle at this point

On the new front things go even worse for the Empire.  In a continued dogfight, more TIEs and TIE interceptors go down as well as one Tie Bomber.  A few A-Wings are destroyed as well as a couple of X-Wings.  However, the Mon Cal now fires another barrage at the ISD blowing away its recovered shields and tearing up its side.  The two Nebulon Bs also fire.  The side of the ISD is devistated, and some of its internal structure is damaged.  Its guns go offline from the damage before it can fire at the Mon Cal.  However, on its other side it launches another small barrage at the Assault Frigate doing even more damage.  The Assault Frigate is in trouble now!

Turn 6

This is the final turn.
Dog fighting goes on between fighters and the TIEs and Interceptors are fading fast!  Only 1 more A wing goes down!

Final layout.  The Assault Frigate is running like mad in the distance!
The Mon Cal and the two Nebulon Bs continue to fire at the gaping wound of the ISD, and they manage to take out its engines and its hyperdrive.  Explosions are rocking the ship now, and it is dead in space.  The commander knows that all is lost and he sends a message to the Rebellion asking to allow them to surrender.

The Rebel commander agrees.  The two Carracks know that all is lost, and they jump out of the area.  The fighters disengage and stand down.

Aftermath.

Hundreds of Imperial crewmen have died in the explosions, but the Rebel commanders allows the others to launch in escape pods or shuttles.  Hundreds are taken prisoner.  After they evacuate, the Rebels fire on the ship destroying it.

The rebels made a bit of a mistake with launching too small of a force at the beginning.  This cost them all of the fighters and almost lost the Assault Cruiser.  However, the fact that the ISD had unloaded with half of its guns helped the Mon Cal cruiser a lot, because a full broadside would have been devistating.  As it was the Mon Cal got to fire all of its guns and only received fire from half of the ISD guns.
